China’s new DigiEcoCities

Two unique model cities, DigiEcoCities are being built in China. The aim is to create cities where the innovations of digital technology are combined with the sustainable development. The emission-free DigiEcoCity™ is also planned to produce more energy than it consumes. These cities can only be constructed by combining the strengths and competencies of both Chinese and Finnish companies.

DigiEcoCity Ltd has signed two significant joint venture contracts for the construction of DigiEcoCity model cities in China. The first city groundbreaking ceremony took place on the 3rd of May 2010 in Gongqingcheng (Jiangxi Province). Another city will be built to Danyang (Jiangsu Province), with the groundbreaking ceremony taking place in 2011. Both cities have a planned population of approximately 100,000 people.

The time to join the DigiEcoCity business consortium is now.

The DigiEcoCity concept creates significant business opportunities for the enterprises in the design, construction and operation phases of the cities. Involvement of the Chinese companies with their local competencies in technology and business understanding are a local business and consumer requirement, and are most vital for the projects.

The DigiEcoCity projects are now moving to the stage where the Chinese companies that are willing and able to work with the Finnish counterparts to realize the vision of the model cities are called upon. The projects need counterparts in all the areas; Digi, Eco and City.

DigiEcoCity combines three fundamental concepts:

DIGI concepts cover integrated, interactive information systems providing access to community services like health care, learning and trade, highly-automated transport, logistics and building systems, and information systems to city management and service production.

ECO concepts cover ecologically sustainable solutions providing energy efficiency at both the building and community level, utilizing renewable energies and waste as a source of energy, and recycled materials, security of water supply, and a clean water environment.

CITY concepts cover localized proactive urban solutions enabling efficient logistics, new combinations of working and living, and increases in functional diversity making the urban structure more vital and resistant against the impacts of the changing social and macro-economic conditions.

DigiEcoCity is a model for an ideal city, combining the principles of sustainable development, the innovations of the digital revolution, and the necessary urban functions, for providing a framework of good daily life in a garden city environment.

DigiEcoCity combines living, working, public and private services, culture and leisure within the walking distance. Its scale and details respond to local needs. DigiEcoCity is a humane and ecological alternative to the congested metropolises.

Gongqing DigiEcoCity

Projects for a new time

The president of China, Mr. Hu Jintao has set a goal of developing Gongqingcheng into a model city for China’s urbanization program. Its objective is to shift approximately 400 million countryside inhabitants into cities in the following 20 years.

– It is important that cities are built according to sustainable development. Finland can offer these projects digitally advanced and environmentally friendly technologies and solutions, Mr. Mauri Tommila, CEO of DigiEcoCity Ltd says.

– The projects are unique in that the cities will offer their residents all the services required for good life, within pedestrian access.

The cities will be energy plus self-sufficient, which means that they will produce more energy than they consume. Energy production is mostly from the renewable energy sources. The cities are also intended to be  zero-emission cities, with no harmful emissions.

A big change

Digital solutions make the cities more ecological, with the virtual services able to reduce and partially replace the traditional physical operations, such as bank buildings. New innovations change the ways of working, healthcare and schooling.

– Digital technology will change the structures of cities and communities even stronger than previous grand inventions, such as the steam engine, train, automobile and airplane, Tommila notes.

In the new era city the use of solar, earth and bioenergy sources, automatic waste retrieval system, recycling and energy usage, low energy lighting systems and water and sewage systems are all implemented according to ecological principles.
